Vector Resolution & Projectile Motion:

I) Resolution of Vectors (video):
Concept:
All vectors can be resolved into two or more components.
For example:
In the examples above the black arrow represent the resultant vector and red arrows are its components.
Note:
1) The vector (resultant) and its components formed a close triangle when a vector diagram is drawn.
2) The resultant and the vector sum (simulation showing how to obtain the resultant of two vectors) of all its components are equivalent in magnitude and direction.
3) A single vector can also be resolved into any two components. Below are some examples.
However the easiest way to resolve a vector is to form a closed right angle triangle with the vector to be resolved forming the hypotenuse and the two components at right angle to each other completing the triangle (see the diagram below).
In the above diagram the vector to be resolved R makes an angle or 30o with the horizontal and component A = R cos 30o and component B = R sin 30o.
Note: The angle the vector to be resolved makes either with the horizontal or vertical must be given. In the above example the vector makes an angle of 30o with the horizontal.
Examples:
1) Three forces acts on a body

Example:
An object is released from a cliff. Its initial vertical velocity, u = 0; its acceleration, a = acceleration due to gravity = 10 m/s2; if the time, t taken for the object to hit the ground is 4.0 s, find
a) the height of the cliff, s and

Concept:
A body accelerate when there is a force acting on it. When a body accelerates its velocity changes with time.
Velocity is a vector quantity and it has both magnitude and direction. Thus there are three ways in which the velocity of a body can change with time when it accelerates:
A) The velocity changes in such a way that its magnitude changes but its direction remains constant (Motion in a straight line).
B) The velocity changes in such a way that its magnitude remains constant but its the direction changes (Circular motion).
C) The velocity changes in such a way that both its magnitude and direction change (Projectile motion - java applet).
Two-Dimension Projectile Motion:
To solve a two-dimension projectile problem, treat the single particle as two separate particles.
Particle One: This can be considered as if it is being thrown vertically upwards to a height h with velocity VV (vertical component of V); VV varies from maximum at the start (just leaving the ground) to 0 at height h and then to maximum again just before hitting the ground. This particle has a constant acceleration and this acceleration is the acceleration due to gravity, g.
Particle Two: This can be considered as a particle travelling with a constant velocity VH horizontally (horizontal component of V). The total horizontal distance travelled by this particle is R, the range of the projectile motion.
Resultant Velocity: The resultant velocity V at any point of the projectile motion is the vector sum of VV + VH.
Particle One:
This is a free falling particle under the effect of gravity.
Its acceleration a = g = 10 m/s2
The following equations of motion apply:
v = u + at; v2 = u2 + 2as; s = ut + ½at2; <v> = (u + v)/2 = s/t
Where v = final velocity; u = initial velocity; s = displacement; t = time; a = acceleration; and <v> = average velocity
(In this case u = VV)
Particle Two:
This is a particle travelling with constant velocity VH. The equation of motion is VH = s/t
NOTE: If the time taken to reach the highest height tT and acceleration due to gravity is g, then
h = ½gtT2 where h is the maximum height, and R = vH x tT where R is the range of the trajectory.

Vertically:
Initial velocity u = - v sin30o; final velocity = v sin30o; a = g = 10m/s2;
(Note: follow the convention upwards as negative and downwards as positive)

Hence, 2v sin30o = gt
v sin 30o = ½gt --- (i)
Horizontally:
Since velocity is constant horizontally, the equation to use is v = s/t
Hence,
v cos 30o = 4/t --- (ii)

t = sq rt[(8 tan 30o)/10] = 0.68 s

Given, s = 0.950m; initial velocity u = vV = 0 (because at the start vertical velocity, vV = 0 as there is only horizontal velocity vH initially);
a = g = 10 m/s2; let t be the time of flight
